Saul's jealousy

Why Saul felt jealous from David? How many times he tried to kill him but failed? why? how David reacted before all of this?! how he could do this?! what should we get out of this?

Saul Resents David

(Now it had happened when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing to meet king Saul, with tambourines with joy, and with musical instruments and said: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousand.”) (1 SAMUEL 18:6,7)

This event made him instead of being happy and joyful with David’s success, the jealousy and envious have filled, his heart. So, he decided to kill David and became a very bad example for anger and envious.

(Then Saul was very angry, and the saying depressed him. So, Saul eyed David from that day forward. And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house.) (1 SAMUEL 18:8,9,10)

So. this anger and envious made a distressed spirit comes upon him losing him his peace of mind and might be his mind as well while as to David he was full of peace flooding over Saul when, he uses his musical instrument.

(And Saul cast the spear, But David escaped his presence twice. Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.) (1SAMUEL 18:11,12,13)

Hence, he was casting his spear as a king’s scepter targeted it against David twice, but, as to David he had nothing, no power, nor weapon, even did not try to resist, but Saul was afraid of him and that his throne is shacked to be held by this righteous young man.

Then, the envious hurts the envious not the envied loses him all the internal and external possibilities, blessings and graces.

John Chrysostom says: “tell me, you the envious, why do you envy your brother? is it because of having a terrestrial blessing? but how could he get it? Is not it from God?! so, it is clear that you make enmity with God making a great fault against him, for he is the giver of all gifts. Look at your wickedness and the hole you are digging to revenge you are digging for yourself!”

Saul Persecutes David

(Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. So, Jonathan told David, saying, “My father seeks to kill you. Therefore, please be on your guard until morning. And stay in a secret place and hide.) (1 SAMUEL 19:1,2)

Then God made a savior, for David, Jonathan, Saul’s son.

(And there was war again and David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them. Then Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away.) (1SAMUEL 19:8,10)

So, he wanted to reward David for his victory by killing him.

(Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to kill him. And Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” So, Michal let David down through a window. And he went and fled and escaped.) (1SAMUEL 19:11-12)

Also, Michal could save David from her father this time too.

David Spares Him

“David said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Indeed David seeks your barn.”? Look, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord delivered you today into my hand. Moreover, my father, see! Yes, see the comer of your robe in my hand, and I have not sinned against you.” “1SAMUEL 24:9,10,11)

In spite of the great humble of David even against a refused king and he is realizing that he receives the judgement from him, he was conclusive, frank and brave. Since, he appeared to Saul in the cave and was able to kill him, but he preferred to face him to ensure to him that he does not fear him, but he left his matter in the hands of the true Judge.

“And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. And now I know indeed that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.” “1SAMUEL24:16,20.”

He realized that the kingdom must get out of his hand to be delivered to David who succeeded in, his way.

“Then Abishai said to David, “God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day. Now let me strike him. But David said to Abishai, ‘Do not, for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?” “1SAMUEL 26:8,9.”

Thus, David could succeed in facing the recurring enmity of him with gentleness.

The Tragic End

(Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it. But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore, Saul took a sword and fell on it.) (1SAMUEL 31:4)

Hence, this book began by the birth of Samuel as a gift from God to all the people a working still works to the account of the kingdom of God. And was concluded by the committing suicide of Saul the choice of the humane council. Really! what a great difference between God’s procurement and the humane one!

“Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan, and he told them to teach the children of Judah the song of the Bow: “The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!” (2SAMUEL 1:17,18,19)

The spiritual man does not feel joy for the fall of his enemies but getting annoyed by his expanding heart. Asking for the peace of all the creation and its happiness! his heart is open for loving all!

Saint Gregory says: “the Holy Bible teaches us that Noah was righteousness, Abraham was a believer, Moses a meek, Joseph a pure and David, is the holder of the great soul.”
