Joshua and Jericho

Why circumcision in Gilgal? what’s its importance? Who appeared to Joshua, the same way as, Moses? why? how was Jericho destroyed? what are the different symbols of this great event? what can we as believers benefit from all of these?

Circumcision in Gilgal

(So, it was, when all the kings of the Amorites and all the kings of the Canaanites, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, that their heart melted; and there was no spirit in them.) (JOSHUA 5:1)
Behold, the children of Israel passed over the Jordan, all the kings of the Amorites and the Canaanites began to anger, and to make an alliance against them or even against their God.
This may show the real battle between God and Satan. Since, the latter cannot bear the light or even that someone enters the membership of the God’s Kingdom
So, in each spiritual success, the enemy gets more anger and fights more the children of God apparently if not secretly, if not through the relatives, then through the strangers even through the same flesh or the servants of the church.
(So, it was, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they stayed in their places in the camp.) (JOSHUA 5:8)
(Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal and kept the pass over on the fourteenth day.) (JOSHUA 5:10)
So, the circumcision was linked with the pass over as baptism with the eucharist so, the believer can’t enjoy the pass over and take part in it if he was not circumcised in his heart in the baptism since through the waters of the baptism, we get the membership in the flesh of the Christ and in the eucharist we abide in Him and He abides in us.
It was not possible for the children of Israel to go for war unless they were healed from their circumcision since, if we got crucified with our old man in the waters of the baptism, we do care with getting healed from our wrecked habits completely.

The Commander of the Army of the Lord

(As Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”) (JOSHUA 5:14)
(Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal of your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.”) (JOSHUA 5:15)
So, if God purified them by circumcision and abided them by the pass over, He would not forbid to reveal His living word from appearing in a material way. Yes! it was Him, the living word of God; the Christ not an angel or an archangel.
The same conversation that happened between God and Moses again is happening between God and Joshua, “take you sandal of your feet, for the place where you stand is holy.”
Taking off your sandals referring to getting rid of our terrestrial interests and the revokable glory and that the servant of the church is not its groom, but he is just a servant, and the real groom is the Christ.

The Destruction of Jericho

(Now Jericho was shut up because of Israel. And the Lord said to Joshua. “See! I have given Jericho into your hand.) (JOSHUA 6:1,2)
So, Jericho is the first strong city facing the children of Israel; the people wishing to enjoy his heritage; representing the world laid in the sway of the wicked one.
To be more precise, Jericho to the true believer is representing the timely love of the world; which is divided into two main barriers; the first, is the lusts of the world; the left hit and the second, is the ego; when the believer believes that he is better than the others.
Jerich was closed as the man who is closing his heart from giving and taking without any emotions or feelings while, the true believer is having an open heart and an open mind for all of those surrounding him.
(You shall march around the city, all you men of war, you shall all go around the city once. This you shall do six days. And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark.) (JOSHUA 6:3,4)
(But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.) (JOSHUA 6:4)
(It shall come to pass, when they make along blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout, then the wall of the city will fall down flat.) (JOSHUA 6:5)
Origin Adamantios says, Jericho is representing the present world, the strong fence is serving the world which is worshipping the pagans and the workings of the false fortune-tellers and the magus and the false thoughts of atheism and the useless arguments.
But when Jesus represented by Joshua has come, presenting His lofty teachings, He sent the priests and the disciples to blow the trumpets.
Four trumpets were blow in the four Gospels, two were blow in Peter’s two messages, James’s message and Jude’s message, John’s messages and Luke in the Acts and the last one was by Saint Paul’s messages destroying the fence of Jericho to fall down flat with all of its war weapons and the worshipping of pagans and the thoughts of heretics and atheists.
(And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.) (JOSHUA 6:20)
Origin Adamantios says that the shout that the soldiers shouted greatly refers to the unity so that, the destruction of Satan’s kingdom require the victory shout of all the people in one soul not that each individual shout separately alone from the people.
They marched around the city in the seventh day seven times till they became disabled from walking not fighting but they could make a victory and shouted greatly in great joyfulness so that we should not fall into sadness and depression because the helper will come remembering that each one hair of our head is numbered.
(And you, by all means abstain from the accused things, lest you become accused when you take from the accused things. But all the silver and the gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to the Lord; they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.) (JOSHUA 6:18,19)
So, the Lord God wanted them not to be interested in the booty and the material gain in this battle, but permitted for it in the next battles to teach them not to care for them in Jericho to gain both the material and the spiritual gains in the next battles as it is written, (But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.)
